Referrals are a wonderful business and a terrible plan.
Most B2B firms grow the same way. Good work leads to referrals, referrals lead to more good work, and it runs beautifully right up until a big client finishes a project or a competitor undercuts you on a renewal. Then the pipeline is thin, and the only person who can fill it is the person delivering the work.
Outbound is the thing that makes a quiet month a choice rather than an event. Not because cold email is magic, but because somebody is working your market on the weeks when you cannot.
The reason it usually fails is not the channel. It is that firms buy a list, blast it, burn their domain, and conclude outbound does not work in their category. What did not work was sending a template to four thousand strangers with no reason to be writing to any of them.
What we do differently
- Targets enter the list because something happened, not because they matched a filter
- Every message names the specific reason we are writing this week
- Sending infrastructure is ours, warmed for weeks, and monitored daily
- Channels run against one person in sequence, not four tools shouting at once
